ABOUT

“Through this exploration he has come to find that we all have our own stories to tell—and those stories captured in a single photograph can live on for generations”
Joel Lukhovi is a photographer from Kenya, living in Nairobi. Throughout his childhood, Joel has always felt drawn to contribute his energy and passion to something bigger than himself—which has led him to his lifelong passion of photography.
Being a photographer has allowed Joel the opportunity to explore the many different worldviews people have. Through this exploration he has come to find that we all have our own stories to tell—and those stories captured in a single photograph can live on for generations
Over the years, Joel has come to appreciate documentary photography as a critical tool, by bringing attention to real people living in the aftermath of true‐life events. The desire to document the climate change movements in Kenya and around the world came as he felt the need to address some of the biggest challenges that normal people in Kenya are facing– a root cause of this being the lack of proper environmental protections.
Currently, Joel continues to work with photography and literature as a form of social commentary, covering the struggles and joys of everyday life. He maintains that without a visual identity there is no community, no support network, and no movement. Making ourselves visible is a continual process in life.
Joel has been acknowledged by The Guardian as a part of “a new generation of photojournalists challenging stereotypical images of the continent by showing another side of Africa.” Joel Lukhovi is also 1 of 5 recipients of the Intercultural Encounters Photo Award given by the Austrian Ministry of Foreign Affairs– awardees hail from Cuba, to Macedonia, to Peru, to Austria, and of course Kenya.
